I moved to Denmark’s third largest city, Odense (pop. 185.000) last year, June 2025.
Odense is the birthplace of the fairytale author H.C.Andersen (The Little Mermaid, The Ugly Duckling, The Emperor’s New Clothes, etc) and in modern times, Odense has become one of Europe’s leading robotics and automation clusters.
“What does that have to do with Cosmic Horror” you are probably wondering.
Well, walking around in Odense, you see things like the doorway.
Just look at that! If that doesn’t scream Cosmic Horror, I don’t know what does… or rather I do. Odense is full of things like this that made me wonder: “Is Odense a cult?”.
So with that, I decided to take some photos and write down some loose ideas for how they could be evidence of a hidden cult in Odense called The Foundation of the Eternal Storyteller.
Note, while the following is fiction, the photos are real and not AI and so are the places referenced.
The Lore:
The Foundation of the Eternal Storyteller
The name Odense itself is ancient and comes from “Odins Vi” or “Odin’s sanctuary”—meaning a sacred place dedicated to the Norse god Odin.
The first thing you notice about Odense is how happy and content everybody is. Sure there is the odd teenager creating havoc here and there but other than that, Odense is an oddly tranquil city.
Everybody is devoted to the legacy of the the fairytale author H.C.Andersen. Every area of the city, every official event, every gathering is dedicated to H.C.Andersen.
He is known to the people as The Eternal Storyteller and his fairytales are seen as promises of what is to come to his faithful followers.
Especially his fairytale “Elfin Hill” is seen as a promise of a life full of joy and party rulled by the mysterious and otherworldly Elf king, all-knowning and all-encompassing being too strange for mortal minds to comprehend.
It is said that the Elf King gave H.C.Andersen prolonged life. H.C.Andersen died at the age of 70 where the average age at the time was 40-45. That means by today’s standards H.C.Andersen would have been around 140 years old at the time of his death according to cult calculations.
The Foundation continuously tries to extract meaning and hidden messages from H.C.Andersen’s writings, sometimes by conducting dangerous rituals and sacrifices. Their goal is to find the mysterious realm of Elfin Hill.
Locations and oddities
The Oubliette of Lost Names
The Foundation of the Eternal Storyteller sees themselves as benevolent and non-violent organisation, but sometimes they feel they have to remove potential disruptive non-believers in a swift and secretive way.
For this, they have the ancient Oubliette of Lost Names located underneath the city hall.
Here they will imprison people deemed dangerous to the cause. Once a prisoner has stayed a certain amount of time in the Oubliette, they emerge with a total memory loss and as such pose no threat to the Foundation’s work anymore.
some especially fanatic Foundation members may create their own private oubliettes to hold what they deem to be suspicious people, but so far none have managed to recreate the amnesia inducing effect.
Foam of the Fey
On rare occasions, foam appears from the drains with no apparent explanation.
The Foundation theorises that it is either physical manifestation of the elven parties in Elfin Hill or elven souls seeking new hosts due to the almost intelligent movements of the foam.
Either way members of the Foundation will scramble to collect the delicate material. Some experiment with it while others will inhale it for hallucinogenic effect.
The Log of Truth
Deep within the Fairytale Garden lies an ancient log known as The Log of Truth. While Odense is one of Denmark’s oldest cities dating back to 900s AD, the Log is even older.
The local history books shows attempts to move the Log in the past only resulted in disaster. And people involved in attempts to move or damage (or even alter the carvings on) the Log, have all succumbed to deadly illnesses.
People sitting on the Log will only be able to tell the truth and the Log is used by the Foundation to interrogate people, sometimes tying them to the Log overnight. This method, however, is seldom used as there has been cases of people spending the night on the Log being driven mad making them impossible to interrogate in the morning.
Doorways to the “Family Offices” of the elder families of Odense
Some families in Odense can trace their ancestry back to the viking era and the very first emergence of Odense.
Those families have their own eldritch crests that tend to sit over the doors to their family offices, the locations containing the history—and secrets—of the families themselves.
The Shoes of Those Who Went Before Us
A relatively new phenomenon in Odense is the shoes that hang from a wire in the centre of the city.
They are said to be the shoes of those Foundation members who have crossed over into the Elfin Hill realm.
Mist Mind statues
These statues are of ancient making and unknown material. And they are surrounded by a constant mist.
They have no name or origin, but the locals call them “Mist Mind”.
Sometimes they light up at dusk.
Fairy Fire
A local phenomenon that happens at dusk. Locals believe it happens when the gateway to Elfin Hill is open.
Fairy symbols everywhere
“Touched by the Elf King”
Odense is a man-made city, but it is at the mercy of the Elf King and there are constant reminders where the elven realm abruptly makes itself known to remind the people of Odense that their city is at the Elf King’s mercy.
it can be small signs like a wet leaf that refuse to dry eventhough it’s not been raining for weeks.
Or bigger signs like a sudden destruction of something man-made.
Flower Festival of The Eternal Storyteller
Every year the people of Odense celebrates The Eternal Storyteller by creating huge grotesque effigies of plants and wood.
Especially gigantic birds are a common theme and they are set alight at the end of the festival and will fly into the sky like flaming birds.
