Dungeons & Dragons – The Emerald Estate (Daisygate oneshot)

For DMs only. At the end of this article you can find my notes on how to run this 3 hour lvl 2 oneshot.

“Stop the thief!”

Our heroes Thrane Ironfist, the Dwarven Barbarian, Baltasar “Spotlight”, the Half-Elf Bard and Poppy Sproket, the Gnome Artificer and owner of “Jolly Metals” were walking in Bayview the posh area of Daisygate, when they heard the elf woman crying out.

Swiftly the experienced heroes set after the thief, caught him and handed him over to the local Daisyguards for processing.

The heroes returned the bag, but not before Baltasar had a quick peak inside spotting a bag of what looked like metallic dust.

Lady Velantis of the Emerald Court, grateful for the return of her purse explained she had recently acquired a large estate in Daisygate as her retirement home and invited the heroes for lunch to thank them.

Baltasar remarked on the metallic dust, but Lady Velantis explained it was worthless led dust and gave it to Baltasar.

The heroes went to Starlight and Skylfall, a local posh wine bar with a glass dome in the ceiling called the Skyroof. Here they enquired about Lady Velantis and her recent purchase of the large estate and all seemed to check out. Nobody really knew where she was from other than she had come with ship so it might have been from outside Skylathar.

Visiting the Emerald Estate

The newly named “Emerald Estate” was a fine residence with a beautiful garden with a classic labyrinth of hedges.

As the lunch progressed it became clear Lady Velantis was a bit uneasy with the labyrinth, not that she was scare of it, but slowly the heroes coaxed out of her that she thought she had seen a fairy.

This was ofcourse ridiculous as fairies and feyfolk was the stuff of myth and bedtime stories.

Our heroes had alsmot written her off as a crazy old lady when they also spotted a tiny, speedy winged woman by the labyrinth entrance. Lady Velantis offered a reward if the party could catch the little creature.

The Labyrinth

The heroes ran after the little creature, in through the labyrinth.

At some point they got the sense the labyrinth was bigger than it looked from the outside, so painfully they scaled the thorny hedges only to see that the labyrinth stretched as far as their eyes could see. Clearly it was magical.

They climbed down and tied their ropes together, to each other and to the entrance of the labyrinth before they ventured further  in.

The wounded fairy

They reached a clearing in the labyrinth and saw to their horror the little fairy unconscious in a pool of blood.

Two walked around the sides while Poppy went check the wounded fairy.

Unfortunately, it was a trap, but the rope saved Poppy from falling, much to the fairy’s annoyance.

She buzzed away with the heroes hot on her heels and as they turned a corner, they faced two Red Caps who had been sent to capture the heroes by force.

The heroes could understand on the bloodthirsty fey that they were in the service of Dornenmutter Helga, who had asked them to capture the intruders into her domain.

While heroes won, they convinced the last Red Cap to bring them to Dornenmutter Helga.

Dornenmutter Helga

Dornenmutter Helga was not happy to see the heroes. She had clearly expected somebody else from her ramblings.

“Wipe your feet before you step on my moss.” and “My little ones are not ornaments for an elf with too many shelves.”

Before the heroes could make sense of her odd manner of speaking, she attacked she called for Tizzel and the little fairy appeared from the hut with another Red Cap in tow.

Betrayal!

The fight was on when suddenly Lady Velantis appeared. She quickly blew led dust on Tizzel’s wings making her unable to fly, scooped her up and ran.

“Thank you for your help! i would never had caught that little bug without it! Now burn with those nasty fey!”

With that Lady Velantis set fire to the crisp hedges with a Firebolt and fled.

Poppy sent her speedy Homunculus Owl Servant to catch Lady Velantis and judging from the screams, it did.

Dornenmutter Helga and the Red Caps had forgotten about the fight and were trying to kill the fire, while our heroes decided to escape the labyrinth inferno.

Safe

They barely made it out before the labyrinth burned to ashes.

The daisyguard showed up with water but the labyrinth was gone. To them, no real harm had been done. After all, it was just a small garden labyrinth.

Epilogue

Inside the Emerald Estate, the heroes found subtle signs Lady Velantis was some sort of aa would be Fairydopeterist.

they found books with titles such as “Patterns in Fairy Sightings: Delusions or Facts?” and odd little trinkets such as glass domes and bird stands with little ankle chains.
