We’ve been playing Dungeons & Dragons on a regular basis since 2018 and it was a hobby that took us through the Covid lockdown period.
But thruth is, I didn’t actually play D&D much back in the 80s.
I got into RPGs in 1987 with Drager og Dæmoner (aka “Dragonbane”) and had a brief period of D&D until that group grew too large and split into two groups: One stayed with D&D while the other moved over to Shadowrun.
I stayed with the Shadowrun group being a fan of Cyberpunk. And I played it solidly for 3 years through highschool from 1990 to 1994.
Over the summer of 2025 we took a break from D&D and played Eldritch Hack and it was refreshing to try something new.
We are back playing D&D, which I really enjoy, but started thinking about other games to run as a mini campaign. One direction would be a pulp fiction / golden age type campaign. Another could be Shadowrun and by chance I found a copy of the 2nd edition rulebook and it got me thinking:
What miniatures would I need to get started running Shadowrun with miniatures?
I think it would be:
Persons
- Two from each archetype. That way they could be either player characters or NPCs.
- Corporate security.
- Street cops.
- Armoured police / riot police.
- Couple of distinct gang bosses.
- Generic gang members / street thugs including orcs.
- One or two trolls.
- A couple of shamanic spirits.
- Maybe some heavily cybernetic’ed people.
- Maybe heavy armour corporate security / military contractors.
- Maybe some sewer denizens, people, rats, crocodile or two.
Vehicles (all maybes)
- Drones, flying, crawling.
- A couple of cars.
- A hovercraft / paramilitary vehicle.
- Motorcycles.
Miniature producers
In terms of what miniature lines the ones that spring to mind are:
- Necromunda for gangers and security types. Archtypes as well.
- Void for heavy armour security types, drones, vehicles. I have some old Vor The Maelstrom and Dark Age minis that might fit as well.
- Infinity for archtypes, security and gang types.
- Warhammer 40k Rogue Trader Ogryn for Trolls. Maybe I can find better trolls but I think the Bob Olley Ogryns are badass and I have a few.
- General D&D animals and ghosts for spirits.
- Old Ral Partha Shadowrun miniatures. If I can find them.
